NICOLETTI DIGITAL is a computer-generated gallery space dedicated to the creation and promotion of digital art through a programme of site-specific commissions and exhibitions. Designed by artist Chris Dorland, Nicoletti Digital is a simulated environment based on our physical gallery’s architectural footprints. It allows viewers from anywhere with an internet connection to experience an innovative series of online exhibitions and projects exploring and questioning the increasingly tenuous boundaries between actual and virtual realities set in relation to social, political and philosophical questions. Running in parallel to Nicoletti Contemporary’s programme, Nicoletti Digital’s mission is to support a generation of artists using the internet and digital technologies as mediums in their practices to produce new works and share their visions to a wider audience.

FLR-13 is a simulated virtual environment created by Chris Dorland in conjunction with his solo exhibition Active User at Nicoletti Contemporary in London. FLR-13 takes the concept of the Thirteenth Floor as a point of departure for the project. Omitting the thirteenth floor from multi-level buildings is a common place practice in countries that view 13 as an unlucky number. This has resulted in numerous conspiracy theories resulting in speculation as to what exactly happens on the thirteenth floor. Conspiracy theorists have suggested that the thirteenth floor in government buildings is not really missing, but actually contains top-secret governmental departments, or more generally that it is proof of something sinister or clandestine going on. In addition to the creation of the website, FLR-13 consists of two new site specific video works that channel the mind bending work of Philip K. Dick and bring into question larger philosophical ideas such as where, in a digital world, does reality in fact begin or end.
