Chrome Shelter is the first institutional solo exhibition in Europe by Chris Dorland, presented by the Museum gegenstandsfreier Kunst.
Dorland (born 1978 in Montreal, Canada; lives and works in New York, USA) is considered one of the leading international voices at the intersection of painting and digital image production. His works are represented in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and have been exhibited internationally.
Based on techniques such as scanning, image compression, and algorithmic distortion, Dorland develops hybrid visual worlds in which painterly gestures, industrial materials, and digital artifacts overlap. His works reflect the ambivalence of technological systems—between control, instability, and permanent transformation.
The exhibition focuses on series of works such as Alumacores and Screenscrapes , as well as a newly developed video piece. The presentation is complemented by an expansive exhibition concept featuring reflective surfaces, architectural interventions, and LED elements. The exhibition space itself becomes part of the artwork and can be experienced as a dynamic interplay of light, surface, and reflection.
The title Chrome Shelter describes a structure that is both protective and fragile: a surface that suggests stability while disturbances and fragmentations remain visible. Dorland’s works consistently continue the tradition of non-representational painting into the visual logic of the digital age.
