In his solo exhibition at the Migros Museum in Zürich, Tarek Lakhrissi invites the audience to take part in a journey unfolding over the course of three acts.
Referencing components from late ’90s series and anime, Lakhrissi’s visitors encounter immersive installations, an enchanting film and larger-than-life sculptures.
The French poet and artist has a particular interest in conversations about race, class and gender. His poems and installations borrow their aesthetics from a vibrant pop culture, aiming to transform traditional narratives. Through the use of autofiction – the interfusion of a biographical report with fictional elements – he simultaneously offers his audiences opportunities for identification while creating imagined landscapes where the mind can wander.
BLISS takes the reflective state of melancholy as a starting point to explore themes such as self-discovery, hidden desires, and the social exclusion of marginalized groups. Lakhrissi’s queer and BIPoC first-person perspective is transferable to the daily experience of minorities within a society dominated by a white, cisgender and heterosexual majority. Through a journey of self-discovery, visitors experience the intricate interplay between light and darkness, bliss and melancholy.
